Decorative water feature pond in a backyard garden

Water Feature Basics: Fountains, Waterfalls, Pools, and More

A backyard water feature is a strong architectural element for any homeowner to consider adding to their property. A stone water feature, garden waterfall, or pond can be great ways to incorporate the soothing sound of flowing or bubbling water and the calming, visual appeal of water.

For inspiration and options available in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the surrounding areas, we’ve pulled together a collection of popular water feature projects that will add both curb appeal and beauty to your home’s property.

Fountains

Water fountains encapsulate all the aspects we love about water feature installationssound, reflection, and movement. From small birdbaths with solar-powered bubblers to larger cascading fountainsthere are options to accommodate any sized garden or backyard.

For smaller spaces, a pretty garden pot incorporating a bubbler fountain to recirculate water can be a simple but sophisticated addition to a deck or patio

But, if your property has more space, a traditional stone fountain with or without a collection pool can be a welcome addition to your courtyard, garden, or elsewhere on your property.

Water walls

For a similar look, but with a more modern and fresh feel, opt for a water wall. When installing a water wall, there are two main considerations: Materials and type.

Common and popular materials include incorporating a rock or brick face, shiny materials (such as a mirror), a sheet of metal, or even illuminated glass or colored resin.

Additionally, there are a variety of water wall types. In our work, we tend to most work with styles that incorporate: (1)  a sheer-descent water wall that utilizes water descending into a trough or catch; or (2) water that flows over a spout or lip down the actual surface of the wall into a catchment area or trough.

Most of these waterfall styles and materials can be interchanged to create a unique aesthetic and can be adjusted appropriately for your specific budget and space.

Waterfall

One of the most dynamic water features to consider for your home’s outdoor areas is a waterfall. Coupled with a pond or pool, a waterfall can become a strong focal point to your backyard or garden.

Sizing and installing a waterfall can be tricky. But with the help of a pro, you can be sure to create something perfect for your home and garden. We tend to work most with clients to build the following styles of waterfalls:

  • Rock or stone waterfalls: Different types of rock and stone sizes make for a visually appealing foundation from which to create your waterfalls. Materials can be positioned to either recirculate water through the base and top of the fountain, or water can be directed to flow into a small pond and then recirculated and reused.

  • Pond or swimming pool waterfalls: Build a spot for recreational swimming or quiet contemplation by adding a waterfall to your backyard ornamental pond or swimming pool.

For the latter, you can build a variety of fun additions for family and friends to enjoy while taking a dip. From walls of water cascading down into your pool for folks to play below or behind, to slides with water flowing from the top down into your pool, there are lots of ways to enhance your swimming pool with a waterfall.

  • Tiered or stepped waterfalls: Heavy in architectural appeal, this type of waterfall incorporates different levels of materials set at various points to break the fall of water as it travels down to a catchall or pool.

Ponds, pools, and streams

The ultimate in water features, ponds, pools, and streams in your backyard landscape or carving through your property are all amazing ways to enhance your home’s beauty. Whether it be for swimming, housing a few koi or goldfish, or simply for aesthetic, these larger-project water features are a sure-fire way to boost your home’s value.

More complex than most water features, these projects need an expert’s helping hand not just for installationbut design and engineering, too.
